The BOI

Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) provides investment incentives and investment-promotion services to potential investors looking for opportunities to establish a business in Thailand.  The BOI aims to be one-stop shop for investment related service and helps investor in three key ways: To reduce the risks associated with investment, to reduce initial investment costs and to improve the overall rate of return on investment; and to provide support services at all times.  The BOI Web site offers investors on-line information about investing in Thailand.  The BOI site includes:

  • BOI incentives page that explains the standard incentives offered by the BOI, then goes into detail about additional benefits offered to firms engaging in specific activities, locating in specific areas of the country, or what criteria are needed to qualify for incentives.  This page also has a link to the list of activities eligible for promotion, which lists not only the activities and their incentives, but also any conditions that apply to each specific activity.

  • BOI services page discussing the myriad investment-promotion services offered by the BOI - given before, during, and after the application process.  It details the BOI assistance in setting up a business and outlines investment promotion services, such as a matchmaking program which brings foreign and domestic investors together.  The page also spells out information the BOI offers about investment opportunities in Thailand, including studies identifying opportunities in key sectors.

  • Investor's Guide to doing business in Thailand gives an overview for establishing a business in Thailand discussing the types of businesses, intellectual property rights, industrial licensing, taxation, patents and trademarks, the cost of doing business in Thailand, Thai infrastructure, and industrial estates.  There are also relevant statistics including tables of utility, communications and labor costs, tax rates, information about air, sea, rail and road freight pricing, and information about availability and cost of land within industrial estates.  Other charts and tables provide costs of establishing and running an office in Bangkok, and the results of a survey of expatriate living costs in Bangkok.

  • Procedures for Obtaining Promotional Privileges page walks you through the application process of applying for BOI promotional privileges - from the time an application is submitted to the time a business starts operation.

  • Promoted Country Database includes listings of every company and every project promoted by the BOI.  A typical search gives a table of qualifying projects that can be individually accessed.

  • BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (BUILD) encourages supporting industries in Thailand by providing information about sourcing and subcontracting opportunities, the Investor Club Association, a private organization which further serves the needs of the investment community, and the BOI's efforts to support outbound investment by Thai businessmen.

  • BOI statistics page provides information about the amount of investment, both from within and outside Thailand.   The data is displayed in a variety of ways, including by country of origin, and conditions, such as export-orientation or size of project.

  • What's New? gives latest investment related information and development including BOI project approvals, Joint Venture Investment, Investment news, BOI announcement, upcoming seminars and new publications.

  • Download page provides a single location to download any of the information referred to in the BOI Home Page.

The BOI also hosts other three supplemental Web sites to provide online in-depth investment information:

    • www.investmentthailand.com is a regional gateway to the provinces.  It consolidates specific information about each province, enabling investors to explore topics such as provincial GDP, manpower, real estate availability and costs, financial services, and social issues.

    • www.b-intelligence.net is designed to develop a network of high-profile business executives, who will form the BOI Business Intelligence Group (BIG).  BIG will meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas and viewpoints on a variety of topics of interest to the members.

    • www.i-expertnet.com is a database of experts and professionals that are available to serve in an advisory capacity to Thai firms, particularly SMEs.
