Employment and Education
Globalization and the recent Asian Financial Crisis have reversed decades of progress towards full employment in Thailand.  In responding to the incident, the Thai government has put a special emphasis on the development of workforce through the provision of higher education and training with an objective to equip the workforce with basic necessities and get ready for the knowledge-based economy.  The current level of the compulsory education is at the 9th grade and is expected to increase in the future.  In addition, many vocational training programs have been initiated with an objective to increase a competitiveness of the labour force.  So far, the level of unemployment is standing at 2.7 percent as of March, 2002 comparing to about 4.4 percent in 1998.  This page is intended to provide viewers with an overview of labour market and education development in Thailand.
