Russia certifies 12 Thai exporters

Russia has opened its doors to the products of 12 seafood processing factories in Thailand, convincing the Fisheries Department that Thai seafood exports would increase dramatically.

Niwat Sutheemeechaikul, deputy director-general of the department, said the 12 factories will come under less stringent quarantine measures for the exports to Russia. While all containers must be checked, from now only only some would be subject to quarantine measures.

"This would increase export convenience and reduce the scrutiny process," he said.

According to the department, shrimp is one of the most promising fishery products to Russia. During January to June 2007, Thailand exported 2,093 tonnes of shrimp worth Bt408.07 million, which increased four folds from the same period last year.

Niwat also believed that a total of 6,000 tonnes would be exported to the country throughout this year, at the value of no less than Bt1.2 billion.
